Today's Saint (August 31): Aidan, Bishop & Confessor (d. 651)

Saints Home Page | BACK | NEXT

Saint Aidan was a monk and later the first bishop of Lindisfarne, England.

What we know of him comes from the Venerable Bede, who says he was instrumental in converting the Anglo-Saxons, of freeing their youth from slavery and educating them, and of encouraging others to fast and to meditate on the Scriptures.

His life of willful poverty also helped in the conversion of the wealthy.

"Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed." (The day's Tract, page F 23, The People's Anglican Missal)
